Inspiration abounds!

Filed in Art, Crafty finds

I was sent to Philly last week to train some people for work. Thankfully my husband was able to come with me and we spent the first day exploring downtown Philadelphia.  We stopped at this great ice cream shop (it was featured on Man Vs. Food too!) called The Franklin Fountain. It was such a cute ice cream parlor full of nostalgia. The first thing that hit me was their floor.

Wouldn’t that make a great hexagon quilt?! I think I’ll add this to my to do project list. And…just so you can get an idea of how great this place was, here are some more pictures!

I loved their outfits as well. Oh, and just so you know, Ben Franklin’s house was down the road. Well, at least where his house was at one point.

YUUMMMMMYYYY!!

Finishing Touches

My husband and I have been painting our master bathroom and trying to make it look like a finished room. Of course, we moved in 6 years ago, but that’s beside the point. The walls were originally light blue and navy blue, but I decided to repaint it gray. That way, when I get the itch to change the color all I have to do is buy new towels, wash clothes, and a shower curtain rather than paint again! This time I’ve decided to go with yellow, white and gray. I haven’t been able to find curtains or a shower curtain in the color scheme I’m looking for. Thankfully I did find some material on my trip to LA. So, drum roll please……

Here’s my valence I made with that material!

I have never done the gathering technique but everyone makes it look so easy. Well, it wasn’t all that easy! I kept breaking thread. However, I am happy with the final product!

Now, maybe I need to try some of these other tutorials I’ve found for making your own shower curtain!

Have any of you tried making a shower curtain? How was it?

Signature Blocks and a Mini Quilt

I signed up for a Modern Siggy Swap hosted by Julie from Jaybird Quilts a month ago. I’ve always wanted to be part of a signature swap and this was my chance! So, I shipped my blocks off and got my new blocks back today!!

There were so many great fabrics! Some of my favorites were:

And…Montana was represented! My hubster is from there originally and it’s one of my favorite places to visit.

Come on…anyone else find this funny?!

There were a couple of blocks from Australia, but Kangaroo Flat takes the cake!

This was so much fun. I had a blast going through all of the blocks seeing where they came from and what fabrics they chose. California had the most blocks followed by Texas! I would do this again in a heart beat. Now I just need to figure out how to construct the quilt.

In other news, I won the drawing for Crazy Mom Quilts‘ Scrap challenge! I shipped off my scraps to her and can’t wait to see what Amanda Jean comes up with. It’s like Christmas in July!

Luella’s Quilt Basket

As I mentioned in my previous post, I was lucky enough to be sent to Los Angeles, CA for a few days to train some of our employees. While I was there I was able to fit in one quilt store. I would have liked to have seen more, but time wasn’t my friend!

One of my online quilting bee buddies told me to check out Luella’s Quilt Basket, so that’s what I did! Being from a big city I wasn’t too intimidated by the driving, but I was a little surprised at how small the parking lots were for some of the buildings! It was a good thing I didn’t hit Louella’s at their prime time or I wouldn’t have found a spot. The first thing that struck me about this store was the lovely painted quilt blocks on the outside.

The inside is big and open! The first thing you see when you walk in are different sewing/embroidery machines.

Bonnie showed me around the store then left me to my own demise devices. They had a nice selection of fabric.

and many lovely fat quarters!

Look at this adorable chair they recovered with a repurposed quilt!

They had a classroom full of ladies quilting away. They also had a nice book room where you could sit down and flip through some books available.

So, what did I pick up?! LOTS O’ GOODIES!

And last but not least…MAXINE!!! I love this lady!

When work sends me back go L.A.,  you better believe I’ll be hitting up Louella’s again and hopefully catching a few more. Thanks to Bonnie and Jackie for their help!
